Looking to experience The East Coast Trail? Whale House Guest House is located right at the start of the famous Tinkers Point Path which connects the communities of Mobile and Tors Cove. The Tinker’s Point Trail is rated as easy, and can either be done as a one way trip departing the Guest House and ending in Tors Cove (ask us about our free East Coast Trail Shuttle pick-up) or as a loop. The route is an easy half day hike that showcases icebergs, puffins, whales, and all the major highlights of the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. Popular with bird watchers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts, the Tinkers Point Path also has some fantastic picnic spots where you can enjoy lunch while watching whales play in the background.
The hike from Whale House Guest House in Mobile to the community of Tors Cove is exactly 5.1 km along an easy coastal wooded path suitable for families. Most hikers take 2-3 hours to complete the trail (one way) stopping for pictures and picnic lunch along the way. If you’re looking to go further and explore more, exploring Cribbies meadows and the running goat bookstore / printing press in Tors Cove is a great way to finish off the afternoon.
What to Wear
Footwear
As with any hike, sturdy footwear is recommended. People do get away with sneakers, sandals, and even flip-flops sometimes, but these really don’t provide adequate protection. Hiking boots or hiking shoes are the best choice for your feet.
Clothing
Bright lightweight clothing that’s quick-drying (not cotton), a waterproof jacket, and a hat to protect you from the sun are ideal.
What to Bring
Bring a small backpack to carry your things
Take your fully charged cell phone with you. Most of this trail has cellular coverage
Walking stick or trekking poles (you can borrow free trekking poles from Whale House Guest House)
Water Bottle
Snacks
First Aid Kit
Flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries
Whistle
Pocket knife

Look at the trail map before starting your hike. Make sure you understand where you’re going and how long it will approximately take.
Plan to complete your hike before it gets dark.
Tell someone your plans, where you’re going and when you expect to return. You can register your hike with Whale House Guest House staff before departure.
Pay attention to the clearly marked trail signage and stay on the trail.
If you get lost, call for help if possible and remain where you are. If you registered your hike with us before departing, we will notify search and rescue if you don’t check in with Whale House staff by your indicated return time
Hike with a friend on in a group, it’s way safer than going alone
Leave the trail in a nicer state than you found it. It will make you feel good.
Exercise extreme caution in fog, storm and winter conditions. If you can’t see where you’re going, stop and stay put until visibility improves.
Be super careful along beaches in high wind or storm conditions. The ocean is much stronger than you are.
