The 2026 SUP Guide
Gliding with whales or chilling on a lake? Discover the best paddleboarding spots just 30 minutes from St. John's.
There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you are standing on a board in the North Atlantic. The water is glassy. The air is salty. And suddenly, you hear the "pfffft" of a whale exhaling just 50 meters away.
If you are staying at Whale House Guest House, you are in the prime launch zone. From the protected waters of Mobile Bay to the freshwater oasis of Tors Cove Pond, here is where to paddle in 2026.

Where To Launch
Mobile Bay
The Vibe: Ocean adventure. This sheltered bay is a feeding ground for Humpback and Minke whales. Launching here gives you the best chance of a close encounter without the heavy open-ocean swell.
Witless Bay Ecological Reserve
The Vibe: Sunrise magic. Paddle out early (5 AM) when the water is flat glass. You will be surrounded by thousands of Puffins diving for breakfast. It is surreal.
Tors Cove Pond
The Vibe: Freshwater chill. If the ocean looks too rough, head here. It’s a peaceful oasis with hidden islands and beaches. Perfect for a warm swim afterwards—check out our Secret Swimming Guide.
⚠️ Safety First
The North Atlantic is cold, even in August. Always wear a PFD. If you are new to ocean SUP, stick to the freshwater ponds or hire a local guide. Weather changes in minutes here. Respect the water.
The Après-Paddle Ritual
Paddleboarding is a workout. Your core is engaged, your balance is tested, and the salt air makes you sleepy in the best way.
There is only one way to recover: Thermal Therapy.
Retreat to your suite at Whale House. Sink into your private stargazing hot tub. The heat soothes the muscles, and you can watch the very same whales you just paddled with from the comfort of the bubbles.
