Decoding the Dialect

"Whadda’ya at?" Don't panic—it's not a secret code. It's just Newfoundland English.

One of the first things that strikes visitors is the sound of our voices. It’s a rhythmic, musical cadence—a living history passed down through generations of Irish and West Country English ancestors.

At Whale House Guest House, we believe understanding a few key phrases is the fastest way to stop feeling like a tourist and start feeling like a friend.

The Essential Cheat Sheet

Whadda’ya at?

[wad-da-ya-at]

The universal greeting. It means "How are you?" or "What are you doing?"

Them: "Whadda’ya at?"
You: "This is it." (I'm good/not much).

Long may your big jib draw!

An old sailing blessing. It means "May you have a long, prosperous life."

Use it as a heartfelt toast or goodbye.

Yes b’y

Translation: "Absolutely!" or "No way!" depending on the tone. It is the Swiss Army Knife of agreements.

"Did you see that whale breach?"
"Yes b'y!"

Some shockin’

An intensifier. Can be good or bad.

"That fish and chips was some shockin’ good."

Words You Need to Know

Scoff

A big, satisfying cooked meal.
"We had a wicked scoff last night."

Twack

To go shopping or look around a store without buying anything.

Mauzy

Damp, foggy, warm, and drizzly weather. The kind that frizzes your hair.

Luh!

Short for "Look!" Used to point something out.
"Luh! There's a moose."

Pro Tip: The Ingressive "Yes"

Most people speak while breathing out. Newfoundlanders have a special word spoken while breathing in.

It sounds like a sharp gasp while saying "Yeah." It indicates agreement and sympathy.

How to Survive a Conversation

Here is a standard interaction you might have at The Fork Restaurant or a local shop:

Local: "Whadda’ya at, b'y?"
You: "This is it." (Relaxed nod)
Local: "Some day on clothes." (It's a nice sunny day)
You: "Yes b'y. Proper thing."
Newfoundland Coastal Life

What makes the dialect special isn't just the words; it's the spirit behind them. It's a language born of resilience, humor, and a deep connection to the Atlantic.

We encourage you to strike up a conversation. Ask a local about the weather (it's our favorite topic). You'll find that our words are just the beginning of a welcome as warm as our hearths.
