You're in St. John's. It's Thursday. You want to feel something different this weekend, something that feels like you escaped the island without actually getting on a plane. You want heat, steam, warm skin, that little rush when you step into the cold... and then dinner somewhere great, and a bed that isn't yours waiting afterwards.
We just made that stupidly easy, and stupidly affordable.

This Isn't "A Sauna". This Is Actual Forest Bathing, Japanese-Style, Newfoundland Edition
We didn't just plunk a sauna box on a deck and call it wellness.
We built it inside the forest, staring straight into the trees, the smell of spruce and salt air mixing with the steam. When you're in there, you're literally surrounded by trees on a forest deck. This is the only true shinrin-yoku ("forest bathing") sauna experience on the Avalon, exactly like the Japanese tradition, but with our wild Atlantic twist.
The proven benefits are ridiculous:
- Drops cortisol levels dramatically (science says up to 16% after one session)
- Boosts natural killer (NK) immune cells for days afterwards
- Improves sleep, mood, creativity, and, very importantly for date night, heightens every sensation
- Add the optional cold plunge (4–8°C ) and you get full contrast therapy: endorphin rush, reduced inflammation, skin that glows, and that delicious full-body tingle that makes everything afterwards feel... electric.
Most guests tell us the plunge is "once is enough, thanks", but having the option right there, 1 step from the sauna, is half the fun.
Private. 24 Hours. 365 Days. Only for Whale House Guests.
No booking slots. No strangers. No closing time. Exclusive to Whale House guests.
Check in, drop your bags, put on the robes we leave for you, walk 30 seconds from your suite, and enter the sauna + cold plunge zone. Use it as much as you want for as long as you like. Midnight session under the stars? 6 a.m. before breakfast? Snow swirling around you in January while you're sweating in sauna heat? Yes, yes, and hell yes. Winter is actually our favourite time. The contrast is insane.
The Perfect St. John's Date Night Formula (That Costs Less Than Dinner + Theatre)
4:00 pm – Leave town, drive 35 minutes down the Southern Shore (you'll hit almost no traffic).
4:40 pm – Check in, robes on, straight to the sauna. Steam for an hour. Maybe brave the plunge. Laugh. Touch. Repeat.
6:30 pm – Shower, throw on something cute, walk or drive to one of the killer restaurants we always rave about: Best Restaurants Near Mobile, Witless Bay, and Bay Bulls
9:30 pm – Back to Whale House. Suite is warm, bed is turned down, ocean is whispering outside the window. Fall asleep stupidly happy.
Total cost for all of the above? Sauna suites now starts at $159/night (yes, really). Or spread it out with Shop Pay, as little as $17.96 per month. You read that right. A full-on luxury date night for less than your Netflix subscription.
"Best date night we've had in years. Drove down from St. John's, had the sauna to ourselves at 11 pm, dinner at Captain's Table, slept like babies. Already booked the next one." — Sarah & Mike, October 2025
