Discover the Old-World Magic of "Running the Goat" in Tors Cove

There’s a special kind of joy you find on vacation—the kind that comes from stumbling upon a place that feels like a real discovery, a little treasure you weren’t expecting. For us, and for so many of our guests at the Whale House, that place is Running the Goat, Books & Broadsides.

Tucked away in the stunningly beautiful community of Tors Cove, this little shop is just a short, scenic drive down the Irish Loop from our guest house in Mobile. It’s the perfect destination for a quiet afternoon, offering a unique experience that captures the very heart of Newfoundland’s creative spirit.

It’s Not Just a Bookstore, It’s a Printshop

From the moment you step inside, you know you’re somewhere special. The shop is cozy and welcoming, every corner filled with thoughtfully chosen books that invite you to browse. But the real magic lies just beyond the shelves. Running the Goat is also a traditional letterpress printshop.

It’s one of the few places where you can see magnificent vintage presses—including a cast-iron hand press from the 1830s—and get a sense of how books were once made. The faint, pleasant smell of ink and paper, the neat rows of metal and wood type, the quiet hum of creativity… It's a truly captivating experience that connects you to the timeless art of the printed word.

Treasures You Won't Find Anywhere Else

Because they create so much on-site, the shop is filled with one-of-a-kind items that make the most wonderful and meaningful souvenirs. You can find beautiful, hand-printed cards, prints, jewelry, pottery and limited-edition books, all crafted with incredible care.

Beyond their own creations, the owner has a brilliant eye for curating a selection of books, with a special focus on Newfoundland and Labrador authors and a truly delightful collection of children’s literature. It’s the perfect place to find a story that will let you take a piece of Newfoundland home with you.

Your Cozy Retreat After a Day of Discovery

After an inspiring afternoon exploring the printshop and the rugged coastline of Tors Cove, there’s nothing better than returning to the comfort of the Whale House. Imagine curling up with your new book, a cup of tea in hand, and watching the waves from your window. It’s the perfect end to a perfect day.
