Gatherall's Catamaran: The Smoothest Ride in Bay Bulls

Is the "Big Boat" worth it? A deep dive into stability, photography, and why this is the safest bet for families.

Let’s address the elephant (or Humpback) in the room: The North Atlantic Ocean is not a pond. It moves. It swells. And for many visitors to Newfoundland, the excitement of seeing a whale is often dampened by the fear of turning green.

If you are staying at Whale House Guest House, you are in the "Goldilocks Zone" and just 20 minutes from the wharf in Bay Bulls. But once you get there, which boat do you choose?

We sent two of our guests, Jack and Emily, to test drive Gatherall's Puffin & Whale Watch. Here is the comprehensive breakdown of the experience.

1. The Physics of Stability (Why You Won't Spill Your Coffee)

The primary reason whale watchers choose Gatherall’s is the vessel itself. It is a massive, dual-hull catamaran.

Mono-Hull (Normal Boats) Rolls side-to-side with the waves. Can feel "tippy" in a swell.
Catamaran (Gatherall's) Two hulls cut through the waves. Significantly reduces lateral rolling motion.

Jack noted: "We had a moderate swell that day, but I was walking around the upper deck holding a full cup of tea. On a smaller zodiac, I would have been gripping the safety rail."

2. The Photographer's Edge

The other advantage of the Catamaran is height. On a small boat, you are looking up at a whale. On Gatherall's upper deck, you are looking down.

Pro Tip: How to Capture the Shot

For DSLR Users: Set your shutter speed to at least 1/1000. Whales breach in a split second.

For iPhone Users: Do not try to time the photo. Switch to Video Mode (4K, 60fps). Record the entire encounter, then scroll through the video later and take screenshots of the perfect moment.

3. What Will You Actually See?

The tour heads into the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, home to over 260,000 pairs of Atlantic Puffins.

📊 2026 Wildlife Probability Gauge

Atlantic Puffins 95% (May - Sept)

Humpback Whales 85% (June - Aug)

Icebergs 40% (May - June)

The "Golden Hour" Secret: Most people book the morning tour. However, the 4:30 PM sailing often has the best light for photography. The sun begins to dip, casting a golden glow on the cliffs and making the whales' breath spray sparkle against the dark water.

4. The North Atlantic Layering System

The temperature on the wharf in Bay Bulls is a lie. Once you pass the headland, the temperature can drop 10°C instantly.

  • Base: T-shirt.
  • Mid: Hoodie or Fleece (Essential).
  • Shell: Windbreaker or Rain Jacket (The ocean spray is salty).
  • Head: A toque/beanie. Yes, even in July. The wind can be relentless.

After The Tour...

You've seen the whales. You've smelled the salt air. Now what?

Drive 20 minutes south to Mobile. Stop for a quick hike on Tinker's Point Path to stretch your sea legs on solid ground.

Then, check into your suite at Whale House. There is nothing—nothing—like transitioning from the cold Atlantic breeze into a 104°F private hot tub.
