The 2026 Cod Fishing Guide
When can you fish? What are the rules? And how to skip the "only weekends" restriction.
There is nothing quite like the feeling of a jigger line in your hand, the smell of salt air, and the anticipation of pulling up a fresh Atlantic Cod. It is a Newfoundland rite of passage.
However, the rules are strict, and safety is a major conversation. With advocates like Paul Smith pushing for safer, broader access, the 2026 season is highly anticipated.

DFO typically releases official dates in June. However, based on the historical "Canada Day to Labour Day" (Saturday–Monday) pattern, here is the projected schedule to help you plan your trip now.
*Note: These are projections based on 2024/2025 data. We will update this live when DFO makes the official announcement.
The "7-Day" Tourist Hack
Can't visit on a weekend? No problem.
There is a special pilot program for Transport Canada certified tour operators. If you book a tour with a company like O'Brien's or Molly Bawn (just 5 mins from Whale House), you can often fish 7 days a week.
They provide the gear, the boat, and the safety. You keep the fish (limits apply). It is the safest and easiest way to experience the fishery without worrying about dates.
The Rules of Engagement
When the season opens, strict rules apply to protect the stocks:
- ✅ Daily Limit: 5 Groundfish per person (max 15 per boat).
- ✅ Gear: Handlines or angling gear only (no nets). Max 3 hooks.
- 🚫 No High-Grading: You must keep what you catch (unless it is a prohibited species like wolfish).
Safety Warning: The "weekend only" structure often forces locals to fish in dangerous weather to get their food. If you are renting a boat or going with friends, never prioritize a catch over safety. The ocean does not care about the schedule.
The "After-Fish" Ritual
Catching the fish is only half the fun. The real magic is the "scoff" afterwards.
If you prefer someone else to do the cooking, The Captain's Table in Mobile serves some of the freshest fish & chips on the shore.
Or, bring your catch back to your Whale House Suite. After a day on the water, there is nothing better than soaking in a private hot tub overlooking the very ocean that provided your dinner.
