The East Coast Trail Edit

You didn't come to Newfoundland to sit inside. Here is where to sweat, where to go for a romantic walk, and where to whale watch from land on the East Coast Trail.

There are 336 kilometers of trail on the Avalon Peninsula. You don't have time for all of them. You need the highlight reel.

We've filtered the East Coast Trail (ECT) into three categories based on actual human behavior: The "I need coffee" walks, the "Must-See" icons, and the "Leg Burners."

Best part? If you are staying at Whale House, you're already at the trailhead.

The "Morning Coffee" Walks

Low Effort, High Reward

1. Tinker's Point Path

LENGTH: 5km VIBE: Chill PROXIMITY: Doorstep

This isn't a hike; it's a ritual. It starts at the end of our lane. It’s flat, it hugs the ocean, and it’s the best place on the shore to watch whales while drinking your morning espresso. Zero incline, 100% views.

2. Beaches Path

LENGTH: 7km VIBE: Beach Day PROXIMITY: 5 Mins

Start at Mobile Beach. If you're brave (or crazy), this is where you dip your toes in the North Atlantic. Read our Secret Swim Guide before you go.

3. La Manche Village Path

LENGTH: 6km VIBE: History HIGHLIGHT: The Bridge

You're here for the 50-meter suspension bridge. It sways. It looks incredible on camera. But the real magic is the ghost town—stone foundations of a village wiped out by a wave in 1966. Eerie and beautiful.

4. The Spout Path

LENGTH: 10km+ VIBE: Commitment HIGHLIGHT: The Geyser

A natural, wave-driven geyser that shoots seawater higher than the trees. It’s loud, it’s wet, and it’s worth every step. This is a longer day, so pack snacks.

5. Cape Spear Path

LENGTH: 9.6km VIBE: Edge of World

The most easterly point in North America. You can't go any further east without getting wet. Incredible for spotting whales right off the rocks.

6. Flamber Head Path

LENGTH: 11km DIFFICULTY: Hard

Rugged cliffs. Dramatic ups and downs. Zero crowds. This is where you go to sweat. It connects La Manche to Brigus South and offers some of the most dramatic geology on the island.

7. Piccos Ridge

LENGTH: 14km DIFFICULTY: Strenuous

The ultimate workout with a view. High elevations, steep climbs, and panoramic vistas. Do not attempt in flip-flops.

The "Sweat Equity" Equation

There is a specific feeling you get after 10km on the East Coast Trail. Your legs are tired. Your lungs are full of salt air. You have earned a reward.

We call it the Recovery Protocol:

  • 1. Boots off.
  • 2. Shower off the trail dust.
  • 3. Sink into a 104°F private hot tub.
  • 4. Watch the stars come out over the ocean you just hiked beside.
